Pursuant to Republic Act No. 9072, otherwise known as the National Caves and Cave Resources Management and Protection Act of 2001, and Sections 10, 12 and 13 of its lmplementing Rules and Regulations, (DAO 2003-29), a Manual on Cave Classification is hereby prescribed and adopted for all caves within public domain and private lands, including those found within protected areas for the guidance of all concerned. With this, a Cave Assessment,Cultural Mapping, and Evaluation activity was made. This activity is a joint collaboration with the CENRO Manay, PENRO, DENR and USEP BS Geology with the Local Government Unit of Manay thru MENRO, MDRRMO, MPDO, and Manay Tourism, the 3rd on the list that was previously sent thru Manay Tourism, Culture and the Arts Unit way back 2019. The first was Mabaho Cave (2020) and followed by Biailan Cave (2021). This activity is also served as the fieldwork for the 2nd Year BS Geology students of University of Southeastern Philippines Main Campus wherein sixteen (16) students embarked on a geological fieldwork focusing on observing and analyzing landforms and land features in selected areas of Davao Oriental. Specifically, the students, as facilitated and mentored by Mr. Christian Paul F. Escarian, a full-time faculty of the BS in Geology Program and Research Center Manager of the USeP-College of Engineering, (1) participated during the Capacity Building Workshop on Cave Safety, Mapping, and Surveying initiated by the DENR-CENRO Manay in Brgy. Lambog on May 7 and (2) conducted detailed cave assessment and mapping of the Kamuaging Cave in Brgy. Del Pilar in Manay, Davao Oriental on May 8-10, 2024. Following the said activities, the USeP delegates also visited and observed picturesque landforms along the coastline of Brgy. Central. Indeed, Manay and Davao Oriental, in general, are endowed with natural geologic wonders that captivate not only tourists, but also the academic and scientific community. The cave assessment is part of the collaborative activity being coordinated with the LGU Manay headed by Mayor Jon Marco Dayanghirang with the environmental departments for the celebration of National Heritage Month 2024. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Punong Barangay Pablito Relatado and his council for the warm welcome and coordination especially during the interview on the cultural importance of the place. Indeed, by Championing our Heritages there development starts and it will go beyond. WOW MANAY Gayud!
